Worship: September 30, 2018

Sunday, September 30, 2018

 Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

 We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   In a season of harvest we light a candle of gratitude for God’s goodness.

People:  In a season busy with school, work, and preparation for holidays, we light a candle reminding us to call on Christ for strength to continue our Christian journey.

Leader:   In a season where the hills around us are clad in beauty, we invoke the Spirit’s presence so we can somehow share that beauty with the world.

 *Call To Worship

One:       Living God, you are the source of our security;

All:         in the midst of our troubles, you will be with us.

One:       Living God, you are the source of our strength;

All:         when uncertainty and weakness grip us, you will build us up.

One:       Living God, you are the source of our faith;

All:         in Jesus Christ you have given us the Sign to believe in.

One:       Living God, you are the source of all our time;

All:         with us now, your love lasts through all eternity.

*Hymn: “Come Sing to God”…………. ……………………#805

Leader:   God, our refuge and fortress, our shelter and strength, we dwell in your shadow and trust in your presence.

People:  Grant us safety under your wings, protect us from the terror the night, and the dangers of the day.

Leader:   Teach us, God, to know you and love you, encourage us to call on you.  Be with us in our times of trouble.  Save us from all that would separate us from you.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

  Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   God of all humanity and all creatures, Creator of heaven and earth, you have given us Moses, and the prophets, and Jesus the Christ to teach us your way, to instruct us in how you would like us to live our lives.  And yet, we are confused, resistant, fearful.  You call us to be faithful with our money, God. You call us to recognize our neighbors in need and to care for them.  You call us to invest in your future, to trust your promises to restore the land, and to deliver those who love you.  Yet, despite that calling, we struggle to trust you, God.  Forgive us.  Diminish our fears with your spirit of power, love and strength, and renew us, we pray.  Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   Friends, we have called to God, and confessed the struggles on our hearts.  Now, believe God’s promise to be with us in our troubles, and to rescue us.  Thanks be to God, Amen.

Pastoral Prayers And The Lord’s Prayer

   (Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering. This worship service is our gift to you.

 *Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” ………..….#606

 *Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:   Merciful and gracious God, we who have received your bounty and your instruction pray that you bless this offering, given in response to your generous teaching, that these gifts may promote peace and good will among all people, and advance the ministries of your church.  Through Jesus the Christ, we pray.  Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

*Closing Hymn: “Standing on the Promises” ………………..…….#838

 *Blessing (from I Timothy)

Leader:   May God, who gives life to all things and richly provides us with everything we need, grant us all godliness combined with contentment.  Through the love of Christ, the blessed and only Sovereign, may we be rich in good works, generous and ready to share.  And by the power of the Holy Spirit, may we take hold of the life that really is life, the life of righteousness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness, both now and forevermore.  Amen.

Sunday School Director/Christian Ed Opportunity.   Jessica will be concluding her position as Sunday School Director/Christian Ed Director in May, 2019.  It is our wish that her successor is prepared to begin working with Jess in January, 2019, in order to provide a smooth transition for the children.  We would appreciate a response from anyone who is interested in providing this important service no later than October 1.  Please contact the church office or Donna if you are interested in this position.

 Zion’s Christmas Choir will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. If you wish to sing for the Christmas season, please let Sharon know.

 The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the mustard seed room. The selection to be discussed is Dog On It by Spencer Quinn. In this mystery series, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. When Madison, a well-behaved, gifted student doesn’t arrive home after school, her divorced mother is frantic. Bernie is quick to take the case – something about a cash flow problem that Chet’s not all that clear about – and he’s relieved, though vaguely suspicious, when Madison turns up unharmed with a story that doesn’t add up. But when she disappears for a second time in a week, Bernie and Chet aren’t taking any chances; they launch a full-blown investigation. Without a ransom demand, they’re not convinced it’s a kidnapping, but they are sure of one thing . . . Something smells funny.

Zion’s Needleworkers are continuing to create beautiful and useful items for our December fundraiser.  We invite anyone with a creative bent to join us at our monthly meetings where we work on our projects and exchange information.  Anyone who would like to learn the basics of knitting and crocheting is welcome to join us at those meetings on the last Wednesday of the month. If your preferred medium is something other than knitting or crocheting, we welcome you also – sewing, quilting, art – the more the merrier!

Single Serve, Microwaveable Cups Of Macaroni And Cheese are being collected to benefit John’s Meals.  The cups need not be a brand name (like Kraft); store brand is fine.  We are aiming to provide 200 cups each month and they may be placed in the cupboard in the rear of the church. The 18-pkg boxes of single-serve Mac and Cheese is also a good donation.
