Pentecost Sunday

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   Holy Spirit, Creator, as you hovered over the waters, cover us with the light of your presence.

All:         Holy Spirit, Comforter, by you we are born again, cover us with the light of your holiness.

Leader:  Holy Spirit, Redeemer, by you we are made a living temple, cover us with the light of redemption.

All:         Breath of life, you breathe light into the whole body of the Church and dwell in each one of us.

Response: “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness”……………………#291, v. 1

 *Call To Worship

One:       What a wildly wonderful world, God!  The earth overflows with your amazing creations.

All:         The deep, wide sea brims with fish:  sardines and sharks and salmon.

One:       Ships travel on the waters and great sea creatures play in them.

All:         Every creature depends on you for food.  You open your hand and they eat from it.

One:       You send your spirit to sustain and renew.

All:         May the glory of God last forever!

One:       Let us sing to God all our lives.

All:         Praise God!

*Hymn: “On Pentecost They Gathered” ………………………#289

Leader:   Holy Spirit, diverse and varied as we are, you gather us together, like a mother bird stretching wide her wings.  Today we draw strength from your life and energy, and lift our hearts in praise to you.  Amen.

 We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One:       Pentecost God, thank you for the gift of the Spirit; for the power and energy the Spirit brings and for the knowledge that we are not alone.  Nevertheless, sometimes we find it hard to believe in things we cannot see or touch.

All:         We remember the times we have not recognized the Spirit’s still small voice, the times we have ignored the Spirit’s prompting, the times we have not acknowledged the Spirit’s work around us, the times we have resisted the Spirit’s transforming power.  We remember and we are sorry.  Pour out your Spirit anew; blow through us and ignite us once more.  Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One:       Our God is always making all things new; our shortcomings are forgotten and we can begin again, with God’s Spirit as our helper.

All:         Thanks be to God!  Amen.

The Sacrament Of Holy Communion

One:…… Let us gather as God’s people.

All:…….. We come open to God’s grace.

One:…… We lift up our lives, our hearts, our strength;

All:…….. we lift up ourselves to God.

One:…… We offer our thanks to God;

All:…….. It is right to give our thanks to God.

One:…… We come this day bound by the Spirit linking us to each other and to people of God from the past.  We come open like Rebekah.  We come with vision like Joseph.  We come ready like Miriam and the midwives.  We come humble like Moses.  And we come loving like Christ, who gathered his friends, and blessed and offered them bread and cup, welcoming them to a table together.  And so, on this day, we too are welcomed to this feast.  Let us pray,

Leader:.. Holy God, we come inspired by your spirit to move from tension to reconciliation; from pain to healing; from chaos to peace; from death to life.

People:. We come together in witness of your everlasting presence amidst our world’s shifting sands; your call to be compassionate with ourselves and our neighbours; your direction when we lose

………….. our way; your gift of hope that outlives despair.

Leader:.. We come before you ready to shed our fears and loneliness; ready to accept your grace; ready to have our spirits replenished; ready to partake in this shared meal.

People:. We pray that your spirit will sustain us and move us to feed others as we are fed this day.  In your Holy name, Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

*Closing Hymn: “Spirit of the Living God” ………………….#288

Labels For Education Update. Campbell’s reports that due to recent decline in their Labels for Education program, they have decided to wind down the program over the next year.  From now until August 2017, only UPCs with the Labels for Education logo will be accepted and be able to be redeemed for points.  Campbell’s has begun the process of removing the Labels for Education logo, and state that there will be a limited number of products that contain these labels in stores through August 2017.  Zion’s Sunday School currently has 10,204 points banked in our account, and have a goal to reach 25,000 by August for our third and final $250 Visa Gift Card to be used towards Sunday School activities for Zion’s children.  Now is the time to check your pantry shelves, grab a pair of scissors, and clip those UPC codes with the Labels for Education logo off of those emergency cans of Campbell’s soups, Prego pasta sauces, Pepperidge farm products, Swanson broths, etc.  Please bring in any stashes of labels you have at home, and drop them in the square, red Labels for Education boxes located in the vestibule upon entering the sanctuary, or on the side table in the main Sunday School room.  Zion’s kids thank you for your help in wrapping up this project successfully over the next few months!
