Minister: Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!” The voice of the Lord calls us to Kentucky.
Mission Team: let us listen, pray to hear that voice and respond to God’s call in Kentucky.
Minister: How can we, the members of God’s family in this place, empower these workers? We have supported them through fundraising and offer our prayerful support. We bring these symbols to illustrate our faith in God’s ability to work through this team.
Minister: Accept these work aprons and be the hands of Christ in this world that builds community and love.
Mission Team: We accept these work aprons.
Minister: Accept these water bottles – may it remind you of your baptism. Baptism with water and the Holy Spirit is the mark of your acceptance into the care of Christ’s church.
Mission Team: We accept the living water of Christ.
Minister: Accept these nails to remember that you are called to love your neighbor.
Mission Team: We accept the strength of these nails.
Minister: As you go on this Mission Trip: Be watchful; there is still more of a life-changing experience awaiting you. You will return touched by the enormous inner wealth and beauty of the people you will meet. Chris, Nick, Gabe and Jack, will you attempt, to walk humbly with God and offer the very best you have to the people of Kentucky…remembering that you not only represent yourself…but also this community and the loving God revealed through Jesus? If so, please answer: I will, with the help of God.
Zion UCC community, will you seek to support and encourage Chris, Nick, Gabe and Jack through your prayers in their time away? If so, please answer: We will with the help of God.
Amen – Go with the blessing of God and this church!
Prayer of Confession:
God of reconciliation, when we have disagreements and disputes it is easy to paint the person with whom we disagree in a bad light; as ignorant, ill-informed or even bad. We refuse to see your face in the face of the one who has offended us. We feel justified in our offence because we say we know you and know your ways. But we are like people of your boyhood town, unable to see that something out of the ordinary is standing before us. Will you shake the dust of our offence off your feet and leave us?
ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE
God’s grace is sufficient, it does not admonish and rebuke us for our weakness but embraces us in our weakness. The spirit is always before us offering us this transforming grace. Let go of the transgressions that hold you in pain and suffering and feel the liberating power of forgiveness.
Leader: Lift up your hearts!
All: Let God be praised!
