God’s Abundant Presence

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:    Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All:           Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader:    Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All:           We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

 Response:   “Standing on the Promises”…………………….#838, v. 1

*Call To Worship

Leader:   We are like a vast tree grounded in your love, grounded, so when confronted by life’s uncertainties we will stay strong.

All:         Grounded in love, so when deluged by doubt we will not be uprooted.

Leader:   Grounded in love, so when inflicted with adversity we will still grow.

All:         Grounded in love, so when entangled in tragedy we will not choke.

Leader:   Grounded in love, so when sweltering in fear we will not wilt.

All::        Grounded in love, so when parched of confidence we will still hope.

Leader:   Grounded in love, we are nourished by the generous word of God and bathed in the light of God’s love.  We are honoured and blessed.

All:         Come, let’s live in the light.

*Hymn: “Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun” ………………#265

All:         Loving God, what a privilege it is to be your people, to be party to the mystery and power of the spirit, to be at home in the community of Christ, to be fed by your generosity, and to feel grounded in your love.  We come with gladness and joy to honour you.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   We confess that in this modern world of ours what we honour looks shallow and superficial.  We honour those who succeed in trivial pursuits, those who are fleetingly famous.  We honour the things that keep us disengaged and unaware.  We honour the things that wealth and privilege bring.  We honour aggression and the attack position.  We honour those who are loud and self-obsessed.  We honour companies that destroy the earth and enslave their workers.  We fail to imagine that honour belongs to the weak and dispossessed, the poor and excluded, the sick and the bereft.  We fail to imagine that honour belongs to those who struggle and those who lose; those who are quiet; and those with a long, patient view.

All:         Forgive us.  Amen.   (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   We are family with all of Earth.  When we comprehend this, and comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth of the love of God, we respond by a change of view and a change of heart.  Our view broadens to surpass that we now know and leads us to new and as yet unimagined places.  Thanks be to God.  Amen.

Free Ice Cream Supports John’s Meals

Trinity Lutheran church in Arendtsville will hold a free Ice Cream Social on August 12, a Sunday evening, with help from Thrivent, to raise needed funds for the John’s Meals program which provided weekend meals to 170 elementary school students who are food insecure during the 2017 school year. The program, which starts again in August 2018, is struggling financially with the cost of providing the meals again in the 2018 year since cash donations have sagged 42% while meals distributed were up 124% from when the program began.

Sunday, August 12, at 6 p.m. the back yard of the parsonage next to Trinity Lutheran Church at 48 North High Street will be transformed into a melee of ice cream eaters enjoying home made music, fellowship, and games and sharing free-will donations to help hungry weekend students in the coming school year. All donations will directly support John’s Meals’ food purchases and are directly deductible from income tax. This is a rain or shine event with the church open.

This gala celebration by the fire pit provides fellowship for all and a joyful way to aid food insecure students in three Upper Adams elementary schools, Arendtsville, Bendersville and Biglerville. A number of Upper Adams churches, combining in joint efforts as UACT (Upper Adams Christians Together) are the substantial supporters of the John’s Meals program and provide the many volunteers needed to secure, pack and deliver the balanced meals given free.

Free-will offerings at the Ice Cream Social will translate directly into food items thus reducing the projected $31,000 cost of the feeding program during the 2018-19 school year. The entirely volunteer manned effort needs help from all people, thus all people are invited to join in the sweet party enjoying the ice cream on August 12 alongside the white steeple on North High Street.   Checks and money orders will be gratefully accepted by mail at UACT, P. O. Box 593, Arendtsville, Pa. 17303 if you can’t make it. Either way, come join in cool sweetness and shared generosity on a summer evening.
