Healing Powers

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:    Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All:           Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader:    Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All:           We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

Response: “Great Are You, Lord”…………………….#614

 *Call To Worship

Leader:   The church is called to be the model of God’s love in the world,

People:  love by its nature is risky business,

Leader:   and so we come to worship today to gather the strength to be risk takers

People:  standing with those who are excluded,

Leader:   advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves,

People:  bringing healing to the infirm.

*Hymn: “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” ………………….……#611

Leader:   Loving God, you call us to deep involvement in the world, so today we come seeking to strengthen our relationship with you and our knowledge of how best to be your people.  Be with us we pray.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   There are risks to being generous – sometimes the unscrupulous take advantage of the charitable.  It happens to us all, and when it does, it can leave us feeling silly and naïve; our pride is dented, and suddenly doubt becomes our life’s companion.  We begin to make decisions based on the memory of the pain of the past, not on the merit of any good that will be done.  We become hesitant to give, and dismiss people in genuine need – just in case things go badly.  This self-protection seems rational, but it has a bitter twist, for we know that people with little charity become discontented and unhappy people.  By refusing to take loving risks, we harm ourselves.

People:  God of compassion, resolve our doubt, restore our empathy, forgive us our self-concern.  Amen.   (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   Of these things we can be sure – God is a long term, relentless risk taker who never stops being charitable to us, who never ceases to offer forgiveness and compassion to us, no matter the circumstances in which we reside.  Let go of doubt, embrace trust, and be at peace.

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.
