Baptism of Christ

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   God said “let there be light” and so it was.  That light has never been conquered, just as God’s goodness can never be overcome by darkness.

People:  The light of Christ has dawned in our lives.  We give thanks and celebrate that we can be that light to others.

Leader:   Epiphany means that what has been hidden is now revealed.  The Holy Spirit continues to reveal God’s truth and grace in this world.

Response:   “Lord, When I Came into This Life“…………….#691, v. 1

*Call To Worship

One:       Praise God, all heavenly beings, praise God’s glory and God’s strength.

All:         Praise God’s glorious name; worship God in holiness and wonder.

One:       The voice of God proclaims. . .

All:         I created it all. . . and it is good.

One:       The voice of God thunders . . .

All:         . . .let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.

One:       The voice of God pleads,

All:         what do I require of you, but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God?

One:       Then the voice of God, who lifts and empowers, affirms. . .

All:         . . .you are my Beloved . . . with you, I am pleased.

One:       May God give strength to God’s people

All:         and may God bless God’s people with peace.

*Hymn: “Sing of God Made Manifest”…… ………………#156

One:       In this season of light, we have received enduring light in the world.  It is the light of God’s presence.  It is the light of God’s guidance.  It is the light illuminating God’s hopes for peace and justice everywhere.  Let us come to the light, and discover we are not alone.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   Recognize the kind of power that we so often covet – popularity, privilege we don’t have to earn, power to control others.  Repent of your participation – for these things do not lead you to God.  Resolve to live in right relationship with God, Earth, and all people.   (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   Realize that the words Jesus heard, “You are my Beloved, my Child, with you I am well pleased” do not come to Jesus only.  They are God’s words for us, as we seek to change our lives and go forward in right relationship with God and one another.  This is good news.  And we give thanks!

Message For This Day

*Hymn: “Come, Behold! The Feast of Heaven”………..…..#511

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings”……..….#606

 *Prayer Of Dedication

Holy Communion

*Invitation To Christ’s Table

*The Great Thanksgiving

Pastor:   The Lord be with you.

People:  And also with you.

Pastor:   Lift up your hearts.

People:  We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor:   Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People:  It is right to give God thanks and praise. (congregation may be seated)

Pastor:   Thanks and praise, glory and honor are rightly yours, Creator God.  Your steadfast love endures forever and ever.  And so we praise you with the faithful of every time and place, gathered in word and spirit with choirs of angels and the whole creation in the eternal hymn:

All:         Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!

Pastor:   In the fullness of time, you gave us your Son, Jesus Christ, to be for us the way, the truth, and the life.  We remember that on the night of betrayal and desertion, Jesus took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to the disciples, saying:  “This is my body which is broken for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same way, Jesus also took the cup, after supper, saying:  “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.  Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Blessing Of The Elements

The Sharing Of The Elements

(The pastor says “The Bread of Heaven” as a sign to take the bread, and “The Cup of Blessing” as a sign to drink from the cups.) (Please note the wine is in the outer ring and the grape juice is in the inner rings. The round wafers are gluten-free.  Please hold each element so we may eat and drink together.)

 *Prayer Of Thanksgiving

All:         Gracious God, we praise, worship and adore you for the food received at your table.  You have sent your Holy Spirit among us to make our meal at this table a memorial of our Lord Jesus Christ.  We go from here, strengthened, refreshed, and empowered by your Spirit to make our living and working, our loving and doing and thinking, a true and joyful ministry in your name.  Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

*Closing Hymn: “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say” ……….…….#182

Leader:   Go now in faith and with courage, empowered by God’s spirit to spread the light and the transforming message of Christ in every dark corner.  Go, knowing God’s love goes with you.  For you, too, are God’s dear child, beloved and blessed.  Amen.

For instance, have you ever wondered:

  1. How, when and why were the four gospels written?  Why are there differences between them?
  2. Why are there two different stories of creation in the beginning of Genesis?
  3. What in the world is Revelation all about and are we to take it literally?

The sessions will continue on January 11, 18, and 25.  There will be a 9:30 a.m. session at Trinity UCC Biglerville, and an evening session at 6:30 p.m. at Zion UCC Arendtsville.  The sessions will be led by UACT clergy.  Please Join Us!  Please let Pastor Kim know of your interest.
