Easter: Christ Is Risen

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   We are a people living in the light of God’s resurrection power.  We light a candle to celebrate this amazing love.

People:  We are a people living in the light of Christ’s saving power.  We light a candle to celebrate our redemption.

Leader:   We are a people enlivened and emboldened by the Holy Spirit.  We light a candle to celebrate this gift of divine presence.

People:  We give thanks for all the ways that Easter has transformed our world, given us hope, and brought us into the light.

*Call To Worship

One:       This is the good news—the grave is empty; Christ is risen.

All:         He is risen indeed!

One:       This is the good news—the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never put it out—Christ is risen.

All:         He is risen indeed!

One:       This is the good news—once we were no people; now we are God’s people—Christ is risen.

All:         He is risen indeed!

*Hymn: “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” ……………………#232

Leader:   God of new life; you are with us in this sacred space, in this sacred moment, as you are with all people in all times and in all places.  God of liberty, hear our joyful cries of hallelujah, for we need no longer look for you in death, the tomb is empty.  We need no longer seek you in the empty tomb, you are alive.  We witness you in life, abundant and bountiful life.  Hallelujah!  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

All:         Lord, bring new life where we are worn and tired; new love where we have turned hard-hearted; forgiveness where we feel hurt and where we have wounded; and the job and freedom of your Holy Spirit where we are prisoners of ourselves. (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   To all and to each, on his community and on his friends, where regret is real, Jesus pronounces his pardon and grants us the right to begin again.  Thanks be to God!

All:         Amen.

We Reflect On New Possibilities

Message For This Day

*Profession Of Faith

Leader:   On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.

People:  And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever.

Leader:   Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.  It will be said on that day,

People:  Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.  This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

 *Hymn:   “Thine Is the Glory”……………………..#238

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” ………..….#606

*Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:   Ever-surprising God, the gathering of gifts reminds us of your eternal grace and creativity.  May these resources be used wisely and abundantly to renew this world and its people.  In the holy name of the risen Christ, we pray.  Amen.

The Order Of Holy Communion

Leader:   Good Friday is past, we celebrate on this side of the cross, and we speak of life from death.  Come now to the feast of life that takes all our past and redeems it with life.  Come to the table for the host is waiting with the bread of life and the cup of salvation.  All are welcome at this table.

*Thanksgiving Prayer

Leader:   Jesus—companion and Saviour—unfolder of alleluias, bread-breaker, life-giver, grave-dancer, wine-sharer, stone-roller, gardener, returned.  Here is our thanksgiving gathering with all those who have ever gathered round this table meeting your promise in this story that pulls death from the world and redeems it with life.  May this bread break open your wondrous story.  As we share it, we give thanks for what has been done for us.  May this wine spill your promise into the world.  As we share it, we give thanks for what you have done for us.  Great God of resurrection bringing life from death,  light from shadows,  adventures from question, authenticity from lies,  we sing with all the angels,

All:         Holy, holy, holy God of new and transforming life, heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest.  Blessed is the one who comes in your name, O God:  hosanna in the highest.

Leader:   In our thanksgiving may we live as the Body of Christ within the new covenant sealed for all for the forgiveness of sins.  We remember Jesus the Christ always.  And so we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

All:         Christ has died.

               Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.  (Please be seated.)

April’s Proverb:   (Proverbs 1: 7)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Congratulations To “Rather Be Bowling,” our winning team at Trivia Nite.  (Though it took three tie breakers to do it.)  They were able to make a generous donation of $300 to the SPCA.

A Mission Committee Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Zion House.

The Theme For April In Sunday School is “Easter: Peter’s Story.” The children will be learning about Peter’s relationship with Jesus, and how Jesus charged him with taking care of God’s sheep.  We’re going to be completing a mission project to accompany our theme, and we will be collecting donations to purchase a sheep for Heifer International.  A sheep costs $120.  If you’d like to donate to our cause, you may give your donation to any Sunday School youth or to Miss Jess.  The check should be made out to “Zion UCC” with “Sunday School Project” in the memo line.  We will have a poster with sheep to mark our donations, indicating each donor on the sheep.  Thanks in advance for your support of our learning to put our faith into action.

A Fellowship Committee Meeting will be held on Sunday, April 15, immediately after worship in the Mustard Seed Room to discuss and plan for upcoming events.  Anyone interested in joining the committee is welcome to attend.  Please contact Debra for more information.

The Next Hoss’s Community Fundraiser will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018. Our March 12 community fundraiser proceeds totaled $127.77.
