Zion sends a $2500 gift to Old First UCC in Philly

Zion was blessed to be able to help our sister church in Philadelphia, Old First UCC.  Old First runs a homeless shelter at their church, and the shelter is part of the Bethesda Mission project.  Bethesda lost a key grant due the current fiscal crisis, and they made the decision to close the city shelters a month early.  Normally the shelters are open from November through the end of April. Old First was concerned for the welfare of the residents of their particular shelter, many of whom have become like family at the church.  Although the church did not have the extra funds in their budget, they made the commitment to keep the church’s shelter open and reimburse Bethesda themselves.  This was an act of faith, but they didn’t want the residents to be sleeping outside in what has been a very cold and rainy spring.  When we were at the church for our confirmation mission project, we learned of the need.  We offered to fund $2500 of the $5000 commitment.  We will pay for this with $1000 from our mission project and we took $1500 out of savings.  It is our intention to put the $1500 back into savings by the end of the year through special fund raisers.  If you would like to contribute to this, mark your check in the memo line, “April Shelter-Old First.”
