New Beginnings Sunday

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

*Where noted, please stand if able.

Announcements

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader: Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All: Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader: Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All: We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

Call To Worship

One: We open the window of our sacred hearts,

People: that connects us one to another.

One: We open the window on our community,

People: ready to be set free to love and live for justice.

One: We open the window on the world,

People: and recognize the Spirit of God in all creation.

*Hymn: “For the Beauty of the Earth”……….……#14

*Invocation

One: As you search for us, O God, we seek you.  May our words be words of freedom, our lives be lived in justice, and may our worship be one of spirited truth.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One: With the life of Jesus as a vision before us, we recognize the ways we have yet to be reflections of Christ.  Resting in your loving grace, we consider our efforts. . .

People: may they be more committed to justice;

One: our concerns . . .

People: may they be more focused on the essentials;

One: our spirituality. . .

People: may we be more free to live in the way of Jesus;

One: our actions. . .

People: may they be more loving and compassionate;

One: our vision. . .

People: may it be more challenging for your sake.

One: Resting in your loving grace, we await a more complete transformation as we live out your expansive, unlimited love a little more each day.   (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One: God who searches us and knows us, who has formed us and loves us still, has promised to be with us always.  Know, therefore, that your sins are forgiven.  Go to live in the pathways set by our loving God.

People: Thanks be to God!

Door Hanger Food Drive – If you received a door hanger advertising the John’s Meals Food Collection, today is the day! Just leave the requested items (Hormel Compleats, 15 oz. cans of soup, Chef Boyardee Single Serve Cups) on your front porch, and collectors from Trinity Lutheran will pick them up beginning at 1:30 p.m..

Ladies’ Breakfast Group – All Zion’s ladies are welcome to join us Monday, September 9th at the Apple Bin for breakfast at 9:00 a.m.  Come enjoy the food and fellowship!

John’s Meals – The John’s Meals team is once again seeking donations of single serve, microwaveable cups of macaroni & cheese which can be placed in the cupboard in the rear of the church. The cups need not be a name brand (like Kraft);  a store brand is fine.  The 18-pk boxes of single-serve cups are perfect as they are easier to store and inventory.  Feel free to contact Jerry (Buddy) C. with questions.  Thanks so much for your faithful support of this important ministry.

Zion’s Ramblers – Mark your calendars and get out your hiking shoes! The Ramblers will be following guide Bob V. on a hike along the Appalachian Trail on September 21st.  We plan to meet in the parking lot where the trail intersects the Shippensburg Road at 9:00 a.m.  We will hike to the Birch Run shelter and back, approximately 3 miles.  September 28th is the rain date.

Book Club – Zion’s Readers will meet once again on September 12th at 7:00 p.m.in the Mustard Seed Room to discuss “My Brilliant Career” by Miles Franklin.  New readers are always welcome!  Here is a synopsis:

First published in 1901, this Australian classic is the candid tale of the aspirations and frustrations of sixteen-year old Sybylla Melvin, a headstrong country girl constrained by middle-class social arrangements (especially the pressure to marry). Trapped on her parents’ outback farm, Sybylla simultaneously loves bush life and hates the physical burdens it imposes.  She longs for a more refined lifestyle – to read, to think, to sing – but most of all to do great things.  Suddenly her life is transformed when she is whisked away to live on her grandmother’s gracious property.  There Sybylla falls under the eye of the rich and handsome Harry Beecham.  Soon she finds herself choosing between everything a conventional life offers and her own plans for a “brilliant career”.

Habitat for Humanity – Habitat is beginning a new house in Biglerville. There will be a blitz build on October 10, 11, & 12 and also October 17, 18, & 19.  Anyone who is interested in helping should contact Roger B. for details.

Kennies Community Rewards Program – If you shop at Kennies, you can help UACT Youth earn Community Rewards points! Grab a sign-up sheet from the back of church, fill it out, and either take it to Kennies in Biglerville or drop it in the collection plate.  Thanks for your support.

AERO Oil Program – If you purchase your heating oil or propane from AERO Oil, you can help Zion! AERO Oil has established the AERO Energy House of Worship Program which gives its customers an opportunity to give to their church.  AERO Oil will donate four cents for every gallon of fuel a customer uses.  Customers do NOT pay any more for their fuel and simply need to sign up for the program at AeroEnergy.com/HOW or by calling 1-888-827-1713.
