Whole Cosmos Sunday

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Prelude

Announcements

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   In a season of harvest we light a candle of gratitude for God’s goodness.

People:  In a season busy with school, work, and preparation for holidays, we light a candle reminding us to call on Christ for strength to continue our Christian journey.

Leader:   In a season where the hills around us are clad in beauty, we invoke the Spirit’s presence so we can somehow share that beauty with the world.

 *Call To Worship

One:       Praise God from the heavens,

All:         praise God from the heights.

One:       Praise God, sun and moon,

All:         praise God, stars that shine and skies that rain.

One:       Let them praise the holy name as God commanded and created them.

All:         God established them forever and ever.

One:       Praise God from the earth.

All:         On earth, we sing God’s praise with the depth of the sea, with the fire and the hail, the snow and the frost.  We fulfill God’s command to praise.  Amen.

*Hymn: “God, Who Stretched the Spangled Heavens” ………………..…#24

*Invocation

Leader:   Holy Spirit, you are the fire of holiness that surrounds the throne of God.  You burn away our sin and blindness; you fill us with the beauty and purity of Jesus, our Lord.

All:         Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   Source of wisdom, Source of joy, we confess that we do not rejoice in the cosmos nor delight in the earth.  We cower, seeking safety rather than opening ourselves to wisdom.  We complain about our smallness rather than celebrating the greatness of the whole universe and beyond.  Help us, O God, to find our place in the cosmos and to accept how vastly your vision lies beyond it.  Amen.   (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   Since the beginning of days, God has celebrated in the emergence of the heavens, rejoiced in the foundations of Earth, delighted in inhabitants of the world, loved the face of humankind – and so God celebrates, rejoices, delights in, and loves you.  Amen.

Reading Of The Scripture:   Proverbs 8: 22-31 (O.T., pg. 558), Colossians 1: 15-20 (N.T., pg. 188)

Faith Lesson For All Ages

Anthem:       “Because He Lives, Amen”………………Gaither

Reading Of The Gospel:   John 1:1-15 (N.T., pg. 86)

 We Reflect On New Possibilities

Message For This Day

*Hymn: “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”…………………..#32

Prayers Of The Creation And The Lord’s Prayer

Leader:   Wisdom of creation, Wisdom of Christ in whom all things in heaven and Earth are created.  You carry beauty in the visible and hope in the invisible.  All power is humbled in service to you.  All things find their fullness in you.  Help us as we work toward a place for all creatures and life to dwell in peace and abundance.  We lift up those who are broken by institutions, by oppression, by lies and corruption, by sickness and addiction that ravage our dreams of a shared life together.  We seek reconciliation and healing.  Gather each of these into you, O God, so that all of us may be pleased to dwell in your fullness.  Hear our prayer petitions.  We pray these things as Christ in whom we are reconciled taught us to pray:

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering. This worship service is our gift to you.

 Offertory

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” …….………#606

 *Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:   God, our Creator, through your love you have given us these gifts to share.  Accept our offerings as an expression of our deep thanks and signs of our concern for those in need, including our fellow creatures on planet Earth.

All:         With all creation, we praise our Creator.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

*Closing Hymn: “All Creatures of Our God and King” ………….#15 vs 1-4

*Blessing

Leader:   May you always be in God’s delight, rejoicing before God always, rejoicing in the cosmos and in the inhabited Earth and delighting in the neighbourhood of the human race.  Amen.

*Chime Meditation

Zion’s Needleworkers are continuing to create beautiful and useful items for our December fundraiser.  We invite anyone with a creative bent to join us at our monthly meetings where we work on our projects and exchange information.  Anyone who would like to learn the basics of knitting and crocheting is welcome to join us at those meetings on the last Wednesday of the month beginning on September 26, 2018.  If your preferred medium is something other than knitting or crocheting, we welcome you also – sewing, quilting, art – the more the merrier!

The Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the mustard seed room. The selection to be discussed is Dog On It by Spencer Quinn. In this mystery series, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. When Madison, a well-behaved, gifted student doesn’t arrive home after school, her divorced mother is frantic. Bernie is quick to take the case – something about a cash flow problem that Chet’s not all that clear about – and he’s relieved, though vaguely suspicious, when Madison turns up unharmed with a story that doesn’t add up. But when she disappears for a second time in a week, Bernie and Chet aren’t taking any chances; they launch a full-blown investigation. Without a ransom demand, they’re not convinced it’s a kidnapping, but they are sure of one thing . . . Something smells funny.

Sunday School Director/Christian Ed Opportunity.   Jessica will be concluding her position as Sunday School Director/Christian Ed Director in May, 2019.  It is our wish that her successor is prepared to begin working with Jess in January, 2019, in order to provide a smooth transition for the children.  We would appreciate a response from anyone who is interested in providing this important service no later than      October 1.  Please contact the church office or Donna if you are interested in this position.

Community Aid Clothing Bin is available in the Zion House parking lot for clothing donations along with shoes, accessories, draperies, and bed linens. We receive funds each quarter based upon the weight of items deposited in the container, and those funds are used toward the Mission BudgetFor the second quarter of 2018, Zion received $400.  After your yard sales, consider donating unsold appropriate items to the bin.

Single Serve, Microwaveable Cups Of Macaroni And Cheese are being collected to benefit John’s Meals.  The cups need not be a brand name (like Kraft); store brand is fine.  We are aiming to provide 200 cups each month and they may be placed in the cupboard in the rear of the church. The 18-pkg boxes of single-serve Mac and Cheese is also a good donation. It is cheaper and easier to store (boxes).  Any questions, please see Chris.  As always, thank you so much for your faithful support of this ministry.
