Out of the Boat

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   In a season of harvest we light a candle of gratitude for God’s goodness.

People:  In a season busy with school, work, and preparation for holidays, we light a candle reminding us to call on Christ for strength to continue our Christian journey.

Leader:   In a season where the hills around us are clad in beauty, we invoke the Spirit’s presence so we can somehow share that beauty with the world.

*Call To Worship

One:       Ascribe to God, O heavenly beings.  Ascribe to God glory and strength.

All:         Glory is in the holy name.  Worship God in holy splendor.

One:       Let all in creation show honour.

All:         Let all in God’s temple say, “Glory.”  Amen.

*Hymn: “Will You Let Me Be Your Servant” …………………#727

Leader:   The God of creation makes us one in body!

People:  Let us join hearts and voices in praise of the Lord!

Leader:   The God of Christ makes us one in the Spirit!

People:  Let us join hearts and voices in praise of the Lord!

 We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God.  Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God.

People:  Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity.

Leader:   The peace that Christ gives is to guide us in the decisions we make, for it is to this peace that God has called us together into one body.

People:  Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity.

Leader:   With his own body he broke down the walls of separation.  By his death on the cross Christ destroyed our divisions.

People:  Jesus Christ, life of the world and of all creation, forgive our separation and grant us peace and unity. (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Prayers Of Creation And The Lord’s Prayer

Leader:   Loving Creator, you understand wisdom and know its place.  Your power reigns over the universe.  Your voice thunders in the sky and your hand fertilizes the soil.  Sometimes we feel as if we’ve been left out in the storm.  Where is the shelter, O God, for the homeless, for the hungry, for those damaged in the storm?  We pray for (specific names or places). May we be the shelter in their loss. Where is the shelter, O God, for the sick?  We pray for (specific names). May we show healing love.  Where is the shelter, O God, for the grieving and hopeless? May we be shelter in their pain. We live under Wisdom’s shelter.  Help us to expand the shelter that your love and wisdom create in our world, and to celebrate and build your hope and justice.  We, your creation, are awed by your power and moved by your love to find hope and shelter for all in the storm.  Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering. This worship service is our gift to you.

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” ………..….#606

 *Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:   Holy One, we recognize that all life is at risk when we live in selfish consumption.  May these gifts go to make a shelter in the storm, and a sanctuary of hope for future generations.  Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

 *Closing Hymn:   “Jesus Calls Us”…..……….#720

Pastor:   Let the thunder assure you of divine power that doesn’t cower at human threats.  Let the rain bless you with new soil and growth.  Let the shelters you find in the storm remind you of God’s love meant for you to live under and to share.  Amen.
