The Power of Listening

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

*Call To Worship

One: Come into the presence of the One who is gracious to us, blesses us, and whose face shines upon us.

All: We gather at the river of the water of life.

One: Come into this sacred space and join your voices with peoples of all nations in praise of the One who shows us the way of peace.

All: We gather at the river of the water of life.

One: Come into the presence of the One where night is as day and fear is driven out by God’s love.

All: We gather at the river of the water of life.

One: Come and listen for the Spirit’s voice, calling us to live with courage and faithfulness to the vision of God’s justice.

All: We gather at the river of the water of life, trusting the One who is our light and our hope.

*Hymn: “We’ve a Story to Tell the Nations”….…..……….……(insert)

*Invocation

One: Holy One, even when we have felt most alone, your spirit is present to us, your promise is fulfilled.  Even when we have felt like we have little of value to offer, your spirit shows us the fruit of love is abundant and there for the healing of the nations.  Even in the midst of loud voices encouraging hatred, fear, and selfish ambition, your spirit quietly beckons us to journey forth to the place of love’s calling.  Help us in this time of worship to trust the voice of your spirit that we may live as your people.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One: You who make your presence known in all of Creation, we are participants in an economy that seldom values the voice of Earth’s creatures, the water, the soil, or the air.  They become little more than a commodity whose value is assessed solely on short-term benefits.  Yet, it is through their voice that your voice can be heard speaking to us about a transformed way of living.

All: Help us listen eagerly to your spirit’s calling.

One: You who come to us rejecting the way of violence, we often fear the ways of peace, seeing them as impractical and leaving us exposed to the ways of force and domination that govern our world.  Yet, you have given us a vision of nations and peoples coming together in one voice, where the curse of violence is no more, and peace is maintained by the power of love.

All: Help us listen eagerly to your spirit’s calling.

One: You who are the source of strength and courage, we often attribute strength and courage to those who live by the rules of power and control, granting them status and influence in our lives and the world.  Yet your voice comes to us through those who are excluded or ignored and who have discovered the courage and power that is found in your abiding presence.

All: Help us listen eagerly to your spirit’s calling.

One: You who call out to us through the praise of Creation, the prophet’s vision of justice, the peace-filled way of Jesus, you set before us a way of living that will be the salvation of our world.

All: Help us to listen eagerly to the Spirit’s calling.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One: If you have worries, let them go.  If you are afraid, fear no more.  If you feel powerless, strength will be yours.  If you have been discounted, know that you are deeply valued.  If you feel alone, join the chorus praising God’s love.  The one who is our Advocate, who wants the best for all of us, brings you peace.  Amen.

Annual Bake Sale – Even as we greet spring, we look ahead to summer! Our annual bake sale will be held at McDannell’s Farm Market on July 28th.  More information and requests for donations will be coming from Valerie.  McDannell’s will also host a Peach Sundae event on August 4th to benefit the Biesecker family.

UACT News – Ascension Day (Upper Adams Christians Together) worship will be held at Bender’s Lutheran Church on Thursday, May 30, at 7pm. While many mistakenly believe the Ascension is about the absence of Christ, the church proclaims the Lord’s Ascension as the universal presence of Christ. Therefore, weather permitting, we will celebrate Ascension Day outdoors in the pavilion. Often neglected by many Christians, the church marks Ascension Day as the moment when Jesus was promoted to the Oval Office of the Universe. Join us as our lives are re-centered around the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Fire Company Open House – The Arendtsville Community Volunteer Fire Company will hold an Open House on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Come see the new addition, check out the fire trucks, and speak with our dedicated first responders.  Refreshments will be served.

Totem Pole Playhouse –Remember to sign up for the Saturday, August 10th matinee of Peter Masterston’s smash 1978 Broadway musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.  Lauded by The New York Post, The New York Daily News, Variety, and Time, it went on to win the 1979 Tony Award for Best Musical and became the longest running musical of the 1970’s.  In 1982, it was made into a movie musical starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds.  BLWT tells the true story of the high-profile closing down of a 130-year old brothel outside the small town of LaGrange, Texas in 1973.  But it isn’t really about sex any more than Fiddler on the Roof is about violins.  At its most basic, BLWT is about how putting life on TV changes it, how it changes people, and how the TV camera impacts that which it records.  The show asks questions about privacy and whether television, both local and national, goes too far in its pursuit of stories, as pertinent a question today as in the 1970’s.  A sign-up sheet is available in the back of church.  Reserve your seat soon – tickets will go fast.

Kennies Market Community Rewards Program – If you would like to help out UACT next year, take the time now to sign up for the Community Rewards Program offered by Kennies. Just grab a form from the stack in back of church, fill it out and put it in the basket.  We will see that it is submitted to Kennies for you.  Or go to www.kenniesmarket.com and fill out the form online.
