Pentecost and Confirmation Sunday

Holy Communion

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:         Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All:               Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader:         Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All:               We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

Response:   “Spirit of the Living God“………………………..#288

 *Call To Worship

One:             What a wildly wonderful world, God!  The earth overflows with your amazing creations.

All:               The deep, wide sea brims with fish:  sardines and sharks and salmon.

One:             Ships travel on the waters and great sea creatures play in them.

All:               Every creature depends on you for food.  You open your hand and they eat from it.

One:             You send your spirit to sustain and renew.

All:               May the glory of God last forever!

One:             Let us sing to God all our lives.

All:               Praise God!

*Hymn: “Make a Joyful Noise to God!”… …………………#54

Leader:         Holy Spirit, diverse and varied as we are, you gather us together, like a mother bird stretching wide her wings.  Today we draw strength from your life and energy, and lift our hearts in praise to you.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

 Prayer Of Confession

One:             Pentecost God, thank you for the gift of the Spirit; for the power and energy the Spirit brings and for the knowledge that we are not alone.  Nevertheless, sometimes we find it hard to believe in things we cannot see or touch.

All:               We remember the times we have not recognized the Spirit’s still small voice, the times we have ignored the Spirit’s prompting, the times we have not acknowledged the Spirit’s work around us, the times we have resisted the Spirit’s transforming power.  We remember and we

are sorry.  Pour out your Spirit anew; blow through us and ignite us once more.  Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One:             Our God is always making all things new; our shortcomings are forgotten and we can begin again, with God’s Spirit as our helper.

All:               Thanks be to God!  Amen.

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings”…….#606

 *Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:         In his divinity, majesty, grace, and Spirit, Christ is not absent from us for a moment.  By the Spirit’s power, we make the goal of our lives not earthly things but the things above where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand.  Through the Holy Spirit, Christ pours out his gifts from heaven upon us his members.  The Spirit, as well as the Father and the Son, is eternal God.  The Spirit has been given to us personally so that by true faith the Spirit makes us share in Christ and all his blessings, comforts us, and remains with us forever.

The Sacrament Of Holy Communion

Leader:…….. Abundance is on offer at this table, for as a multitude of grain and grapes are transformed into a single loaf and a solitary cup, so the multitude of people of faith from all times and all traditions gather here at a single table of remembrance.

People:……. Here we are nourished and restored – here wrongs are made right, here hurts are healed, here  prejudice and injustices pass away.

Leader:…….. Here we are encircled by the community of saints, who call us out of the ordinary into the extraordinary that is the eternally transforming love of God.

People:……. Here we remember the Christ who sat with the excluded, stood by those who were grieving, and spoke words of assurance to all who would listen.  Here we can be certain we are welcome.

Leader:…….. Here the Spirit of God dwells in these elements of bread and wine and we are fed with good things, things that produce a flourishing life – kindness, compassion, joy, and love, and we are grateful.  Amen.

We’re planning to attend the Saturday, August 4, matinee performance of “Mama Mia!”  Over 54 million people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story, and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show!  On a small Greek island, Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding — one which includes her father giving her away.  The problem?  Sophie doesn’t know who he is! A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!  The story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter, and friendship, creating an unforgettable show.  If enough interest is expressed, an after-performance behind the scenes tour can be arranged for the group.  Tickets are $30 per person.  Please make checks payable to Debra Scarborough.  A sign-up sheet is available in the back of the sanctuary.  Reserve your seat soon; tickets will go fast!  We expect the show to sell out soon.
