3rd Sunday in Lent:  “Beautiful Law”

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Prelude

The wheel of the church year has turned to Lent. In Advent we moved from darkness into the light, during Epiphany we celebrated the revelation of the light of Christ to all the world, and now in Lent we move from light into the darkness of Good Friday.  To symbolize this journey we have six candles on the altar, representing the 6 Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter.  Each Sunday we will extinguish another candle as the passion of Christ draws near.

Announcements

 Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   We light a light in the name of God who lit the world and breathed the breath of life into us.

People:  We light a light in the name of the Son who saved the world and stretched out His hand to me.

Leader:   We light a light in the name of the Spirit who encompasses the world and blesses our soul with yearning.

All:         We will light three lights for the Trinity of love:  God above us, God beside us, God beneath us; the beginning, the end, the everlasting one.

 *Call To Worship

Leader:   People of God we are here; in this sacred space, in this sacred moment.  Briefly leave daily concerns aside, for here we recall the stories of faith, here we are awed by the glory of God, who made heaven and earth, yet knows us by name, here we remember whose we are.

*Hymn:   “Precious Lord, Take My Hand“………………#834

*Invocation

Leader:   As all creation sings praises to God today we lift our voices to join the choir.  We sing of the joy and glory of being embraced by the God of light.  We sing of the sweetness of being held in love by the God of justice.  We sing with voices filled with awe, knowing that we have a place in your realm, that is no less than that of the star in the heavens, and we are grateful.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Call to Confession:   “Lamb of God”…………….…..#518, v 3

 Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost.  We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way.  We are misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained and great when we are small.  We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored your truth.  Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin.  Return us to paths of righteousness through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

All:         Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   Jesus said:  Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Reading Of The Scripture: Exodus 20: 1-17; (O.T., pg. 63)

Faith Lesson For All Ages

Anthem:   “On to Higher Ground”…………….…Hayes

*Hymn: “Shall We Gather at the River”…………..……..#375

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

*Closing Hymn: “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” ………………….#353

 *Commissioning

One:       As you leave this sacred space, remember the God who made the stars in the heavens, made and loves you.  Remember your sacredness, remember your place in the eternal flow of life, and realize this as you travel your way in the sweet embrace of the God of justice and light.

All:         We will flood the world with God’s justice and light.  Amen.
