Third Sunday of Lent
March 15, 2020

Welcome to Zion and a special welcome to our visitors. Please sign the guest book! If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us. We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices. Please ask an usher if you require either of these. Restrooms are located in the church school building. Go through the door next to the choir and straight ahead. We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Again, exit through the door next to the choir, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.
*Where noted, please stand if able.
Congregational response is in bold print.

PRELUDE
TIME OF SHARING
CHIME INTERLUDE AND CANDLELIGHTING
*CALL TO WORSHIP
“You have made us for yourself,” said St. Augustine,
“and the heart is restless until it finds its rest in you.”
(From his Confessions).
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,” said Jesus,
“and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11: 29)
We worship today to fill that void in our lives
and to bring calm to the restlessness of our souls.

* PRAYER OF INVOCATION
We can worship you anywhere, of course—
in our homes, or in the woods, or on the water—
anywhere in your creation;
but here we worship you in a special setting—
in your special house.
Here we join our voices with all your people,
here we are open to your revealed word,
and here we prepare ourselves to serve in your world.

*GATHERING HYMN # 415 “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy”

TIME OF CONFESSION
What is it that cuts us off from God and separates us from sisters and brothers?
How do we, in our narrow preoccupations, turn away from the life of love God offers?
Why do we err in our hearts and ignore the revelation
of God’s higher purposes that surround us?
God is ready to listen to our confession.
Forgive us, O Holy One, if we take a negative view of life;
if we see the blemish and ignore the beauty;
if, when we receive, we question the motive;
if we see the glass half empty rather than half full;
if we anticipate the worst rather than the best.
Pardon us, we pray, for our gloom, and teach us
to walk with confidence, trusting in your presence.

And now let us confess in silence those fears that keep us from loving as Christ has loved us.

KYRIE ELEISON
(congregation sings response)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Be assured of this: that the Christ who welcomed outcasts, wept for Jerusalem,
forgave an adulteress, and pardoned his executioners,
forgives each of us and accepts us into the circle of his family.
Believe this Good News and live by it.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
And now, experiencing once again the forgiving power of our loving God,
let us say what we believe, using the Apostles’ Creed.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only begotten son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and
sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

SILENT PRAYER AND PREPARATION

THE MESSAGE FOR THE MORNING

*HYMN # 215 “What Wondrous Love Is This”

PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE GIVING OF OURSELVES AND OUR OFFERINGS
Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21).
We know that the opposite is also true – that where our heart is,
there will we place our treasure.
Wherever our love is, our finances will follow.

OFFERTORY

*OFFERTORY RESPONSE # 717 “For the Life That You Have Given”
For the life that you have given, for the love in Christ made known,
With these fruits of time and labor, with these gifts that are your own;
Here we offer, Lord, our praises; heart and mind and strength we bring;
Give us grace to love and serve you, living what we pray and sing.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION
We give these tithes and offerings as an affirmation of our
faith in Christ and of our love for him and for each other.

*CLOSING HYMN “Above the Hills of Time”
(traditional Irish melody)
Above the hills of time the cross is gleaming,
Fair as the sun when night has turned to day;
And from it love’s pure light is richly streaming,
To cleanse the heart and banish sin away.
To this dear cross the eyes of men are turning, today as in the ages lost to sight;
And so for Thee, O Christ, men’s hearts are yearning,
as ship-wrecked seamen yearn for morning light.

The cross, O Christ, Thy wondrous love revealing,
Awakes our hearts as with the light of morn,
And pardon o’er our sinful spirits stealing,
Tells us that we, in Thee, have been reborn.
Like echoes to sweet temple bells replying
Our hearts, O Lord, makes answer to Thy love;
And we will love Thee with a love undying,
Till we are gathered to Thy home above.

*COMMISSION AND BENEDICTION
Go forth in confidence that God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

*CHORAL BENEDICTION # 227 “Jesus, Remember Me” (sing twice)
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom.

*CHIME MEDITATION
