4th Sunday in Lent
Visitors: Welcome to our church. Please sign our guest book! If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us. We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices. Please ask an usher if you require either of these. Restrooms are located in the church school building. Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead. We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.
We Gather In Awe And Wonder
The wheel of the church year has turned to Lent. In Advent we moved from darkness into the light, during Epiphany we celebrated the revelation of the light of Christ to all the world, and now in Lent we move from light into the darkness of Good Friday. To symbolize this journey we have six candles on the altar, representing the 6 Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Each Sunday we will extinguish another candle as the passion of Christ draws near.
Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting
Leader: We light a light in the name of God who lit the world and breathed the breath of life into us.
People: We light a light in the name of the Son who saved the world and stretched out His hand to me.
Leader: We light a light in the name of the Spirit who encompasses the world and blesses our soul with yearning.
All: We will light three lights for the Trinity of love: God above us, God beside us, God beneath us; the beginning, the end, the everlasting one.
*Call To Worship
Leader: People of God, gather today; in this sacred space, in this sacred moment. For this time step aside from your daily concerns, for here we recall the stories of faith. Here we see God does not dodge dangerous places, here we are called to stand and face our fears, here we remember whose we are.
*Hymn: “Come, Thou Font of Every Blessing” …………..…#475
Leader: God, we acknowledge our humanity, for when we are in danger we experience fear, when we are in intimidating places we become anxious, when times are tough, our endurance is low and we fall into a culture of complaint. More often than not, when our journey is rough we travel a round-about way. But here we would take time to stop, to look up, to take stock, to recognize your loving presence in our lives, to truly see the blessings given to us, and to once again choose love over fear, light over darkness, life over death. Amen.
We Recognize Our Brokenness
Call to Confession: “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling”…..……#418, v. 1
Prayer Of Confession
Leader: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ, our Lord.
All: Amen. (A time for silent prayers of confession.)
Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness
Leader: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
Reading Of The Scripture: Numbers 21: 4-9 (O.T., pg. 134)
Faith Lesson For All Ages
Anthem: “Here in the House of the Lord”…………..Price/Besig

Message For This Day
*Hymn: “Here I Am, Lord”……………………..#69
Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer
(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.)
Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support. For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering. This worship service is our gift to you.
*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” ………..….#606
*Prayer Of Dedication
Leader: Bless these gifts that we give today, for we lift our eyes and see there is much we can do to bring about wholeness and healing in our world. May they contribute in bringing light to dark places. Amen.
We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives
*Closing Hymn: “God of Grace and God of Glory” ……….#307
*Our Lenten Journey To The Cross
Scripture predicts the passion of Christ: Matthew 16: 21-25 (N.T., pg. 17) (We will extinguish four candles.)
One: As you leave this sacred space, remember God stands with you in shadowed and dangerous places. Remember your sacredness, remember your place in the eternal flow of life, realize that when the road is tough, God’s love is steadfast and overcomes every fear.
All: We will flood the world’s shadowed and dangerous places with the love of God that is stronger than fear. Amen.
*Choral Benediction: “We Are Forgiven”………….….……#447
*Where noted, please stand if able.
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or else he will rebuke you, and you will be found a liar. Proverbs 30: 5-6
