 *Call To Worship

One: Come, let us rejoice in the freedom that is ours.

All: It was there in the beginning, from the Alpha of time.

One: The very heavens proclaim the glory of the One in whom freedom is found.

All: The foundation of freedom is the righteousness and justice of God.

One: Freedom knows no bounds; it reaches across all eternity to the Omega of time.

All: We come to share in this spirit.

One: The one who reveals freedom’s fullness is coming soon.

All: Amen. Come, Christ Jesus.

*Hymn: “Praise the Lord! God’s Glories Show”…………….……#33

*Invocation

One: Holy One, you come to us as a flash of lightning, an uncontrollable source of energy and power.  Even while we try to keep you safely within the confines of our liturgy, hymns, and theology, your spirit continues breaking forth in new and unexpected ways, reminding us that you are the One in whom the whole earth rejoices.  In this time of worship and prayer, loosen our chains, open our hearts that we may hear and respond to your spirit’s call.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One: You who delight in righteousness and justice, we are grateful for the comforts of our homes, but confess that the places we call home sometimes constrain us from seeing the world as you see it.  Within the restrictions of our comforts, we are unable to recognize how those same comforts are denied to others.

All: Loosen our chains and set us free.

One: You who delight in righteousness and justice, we are grateful for steady work and income on which we may depend, but confess that our anxieties about not having enough can keep us from recognizing the ways others are exploited by the same systems from which we benefit.  Confined by the ability to meet our own needs, we fail to recognize the needs of those for whom opportunities are regularly denied.

All:   Loosen our chains and set us free.

One: You who delight in righteousness and justice, we are grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, but confess that our fears too often put us in prisons of our own making.  Rather than face uncertainties with courage and trust, we lock ourselves behind walls and closed doors and let our fears become a prison, not only for ourselves but many others as well.

All: Loosen our chains and set us free.

One: You who delight in righteousness and justice, we are grateful for relationships of love and friendship, but confess that sometimes we let these bonds keep us from hearing the voice of those who are excluded from the care and support on which we depend.  We let our relationships chain us to limited worldviews, experiences, cultures, and we become unable to recognize the potential for new and vital relationships that might be ours.

All: Loosen our chains and set us free.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One: Christ who is in you, Christ who is in me, Christ who is in all that exists, calls us into a unity through which all creation and all peoples are nourished by the waters of life.  Christ breaks the chains that hold back our compassion, unlocks the doors that keep us from living justly, and gives us the song of salvation’s freedom.

All: Thanks be to God!  Amen.
