Power to Do

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   God said “let there be light” and so it was.  That light has never been conquered, just as God’s goodness can never be overcome by darkness.

People:  The light of Christ has dawned in our lives.  We give thanks and celebrate that we can be that light to others.

Leader:   Epiphany means that what has been hidden is now revealed.  The Holy Spirit continues to reveal God’s truth and grace in this world.

Response: “Lord, When I Came into This Life“…………..#691, v. 4

 *Call To Worship

All:         This is the day that our God has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!

One:       Which god is that?  Which god do we worship today?

All:         The God who created all things in heaven and on earth – the one and only God.

One:       Yet we can be busy with our many other gods.  The god of appearances putting ourselves together to look just right!  The god of money, holding our purses and financial dealings close to our hearts – guarding them fiercely.  Come, people of God, and let us celebrate that our one great God offers us freedom from all of this and new life each day!

All:         This is our salvation.  Come, let us worship.

*Hymn: “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”. ………….……#611

One:       God of deserving praise, you give us voices to witness, hands to extend in welcome and care, and hearts to love.  May your calling grow deeper within as your Spirit equips and inspires us with power to love.  Amen.

 We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One:       When we fear poverty,

All:         help us to trust in the power of community.

One:       When we fear rejection,

All:         help us to know our value and worth deep within us.

One:       When we fear hunger and thirst.

All:         help us to give thanks for the bread and cup before us each day.

One:       When we fear solitude,

All:         help us to reach out in love to others in need.

One:       And when we fear our own pain and death,

All:         help us to reach out in our need for the sustenance of others.  Holy One, Forgive us our fears, help us return to the ways of your grace, and forgive us our worship of other gods.  Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   God has created us in community and communion with one another.  Let us look to each other and see the one true God that has created us all, and invites us to live in harmony and peace.  Let us be assured that when the other gods we entertain fail us, our loving God is with us and will not abandon us.

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” ….….#606

 *Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:   We give in celebration of our one true and great God.  May our wealth be a gift to God.  May our successes be held up as honour to God.  May our beauty be experienced in every gesture of love and kindness we ever share, and may our willingness to work a little harder be seen by God as our devotion to God’s world and wisdom.  Gracious God, bless these our offerings, we pray.  Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

As A Mission Project, Isabelle will be collecting used batteries to be recycled.  She will be collecting single use household, rechargeable household, button, cellphone and tool batteries.  Please bring your old batteries and place them in the big green box in the back of the church starting February 11.  She will be collecting till the box is full!

The Board Of Upper Adams Christians Together invite and encourage all interested folks to attend our annual meeting on February 5, 2018, at Zion UCC in Arendtsville!  The public portion of the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and end near 8:30 p.m.  Reports on all our active ministries and financial standing along with future visions for 2018 will highlight the evening, surrounded with celebration for how God has actively grown good fruit in our midst.

On Sunday, February 18, we will have a Jesus Loves Me Valentine’s Day party.  Parents have opted to not have the children do Valentine’s for each other; however, Jessica still would like them to each receive a card or two.  Jess will assemble goodie bags and would love for members of the church to help with cards.  A basket of Valentine’s will be on the credenza with each child’s name on an envelope.  Feel free to take a card and write a note to that child.  If you know something about them, have recognized good behavior in church, etc., feel free to write a personal note.  Jessica will collect them until February 11 in a bag that she will place with the basket.  Thanks in advance for your help!!

Our Treasurer, Laurie, has announced her intention to “retire” from this position in May. We have so appreciated Laurie’s steady steering of our finances at Zion.  In addition, Jess will be “retiring” at the end of this SS program year.  We are also deeply appreciative of her work to strengthen and maintain a fine program.  So Zion U.C.C. has the following paid positions open:  church treasurer beginning June 2018 and Sunday School Supervisor beginning August 2018.  Anyone interested in receiving information and/or applications for either position should contact Donna.

The 2018 Flower Chart is posted in the vestibule.  Please sign up. When Paying For Altar Flowers, please give payment to the altar guild representative for that month. A check payment is preferred. Altar flowers are from The Flower Boutique with a florist’s choice $35 arrangement cost.
