22 Gettysburg Street Box 538
Arendtsville, Pennsylvania
Second Sunday after Epiphany
January 19, 2020

Welcome to Zion and a special welcome to our visitors. Please sign the guest book! If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us. We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices. Please ask an usher if you require either of these. Restrooms are located in the church school building. Go through the door next to the choir and straight ahead. We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Again, exit through the door next to the choir, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.
*Where noted, please stand if able.
Congregational response is in bold print.

This is a new day – a day of living, breathing, walking, and talking;
a new day of opportunities, choices, and challenges;
a new day for friendship, love, and laughter; in short, a new gift of God’s grace.
Come, let us worship our God with thanksgiving and joy.

We listen once more for your call, O God, as your Word summons us and gives us life. You have been with us in times of joy and triumph
and seasons of despair and desolation. When we labor in in vain,
spending our strength without results, you preserve and encourage us.
When others despise and reject us, you do not give up on us.
We rejoice in your faithfulness through all our days.

*GATHERING HYMN # 163 “Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice”

Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Meet Jesus in those moments of self-examination and confession.
Turn away from the allure of false gods, the attraction of false security,
the appeal of deceptive ways.
God is waiting to draw us up from the trap of self-concern into which we have strayed.

God of grace, we confess the uncertainty of our faith
and hesitancy of our commitment.
We have misused the gifts you have given us, using our strength for our self-interest. We have not trusted you, using our weakness as an excuse to avoid serving you.
We have taken your blessing for granted and hidden the light you have asked us to carry into the world. Draw us back with your forgiving love,
so we may live each day as a gift of your continuing presence.

Now let us silently reflect on the personal struggles and fears
that keep us from being fully free.

John the Baptist says to us as he said to the people of his day:
“Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”
Through Him we are a forgiven people.
Thanks be to God for this magnificent gift of love.

HYMN RESPONSE # 435 “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” v. 2
For the love of God is broader than the measures of the mind.
And the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.
If our love were but more faithful, we would gladly trust God’s word.
And our lives reflect thanksgiving for the goodness of our Lord.

I Corinthians 1: 1-9, p. 155 (NT)

CHOIR ANTHEM: “We Are Yours, Lord” – “McAfee”/Price/Besig

St. John 1: 29-42, p. 87 (NT)

*HYMN # 286 “Breathe on Me, Breath of God”

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done
On earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Let us give generously and confidently, for we are investing in a cause
That will never fail, and we trust that we shall receive whatever we need.

*OFFERTORY RESPONSE # 606 “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”
Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Holy God, as we give, we pray for those who will benefit from our tithes and offerings, for we know that somewhere, sometime,
real people will experience the results of what we do here today.

*CLOSING HYMN # 377 “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”

May God grant you confidence in the face of challenge, calm in the midst of
storms, integrity in the face of temptation, and charity in a world of selfishness.

*CHORAL BENEDICTION # 372 “O For a World” v. 2
O for a world where goods are shared and misery relieved,
Where truth is spoken children spared, equality achieved.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS are given to the glory of God and in honor of Miriam R.’s 94th birthday by her family.

WEATHER CANCELLATION – If inclement weather causes cancellation of worship, the announcement will be on the church answering machine by 7:30 a.m.

CONSISTORY INSTALLATION – Today, we install to serve on Consistory Debra S., serving a three-year term, and Craig L., serving a two-year term replacing Kevin C.

CONGREGATIONAL CHAT – Today is our second Congregational Chat following worship. The Holy Cow! Congregational Assessment Tool (CAT) will be introduced. By completing CAT you can help the Profile Committee to develop Zion’s profile to reflect the vision of the membership for the future of this congregation, while also helping to define the skills and abilities of new leadership that will help Zion reach its vision and goals. The CAT survey will be available online or you may request a paper copy; it must be completed and either sent to Holy Cow! (via email) or returned to the church by February 16th. All responses are confidential. After the results are compiled, we will announce a date when you will have an opportunity to hear the results of the survey. Thank you for your help in developing an accurate picture of Zion, both in the present and in the hopes for years to come.

“SOUPER” BOWL SUNDAY! Zion will be having a canned soup drive on Sunday, January 26 and February 2. There will be a football field set up in the front of the church. Please bring your cans of soup, (tomato, vegetable, chicken noodle/rice/star etc.) and place them in the end zone of the team you think will win the Super Bowl. After the game is played, we’ll see if Zion was correct in picking the winner. The soup will then be delivered to John’s Meals. Last year, we donated 272 cans. Let’s see if we can top that amount this year!

VOLUNTEER CLEARANCES – If you are interested in receiving some assistance with renewing or applying for your background check and child abuse clearance in the state of PA, there will be a session on January 26th after Sunday School (11:30) at APM.

GIVING STATEMENTS FOR 2019 – If you have not done so already, please pick up your 2019 Giving Statement from the box in the rear of church. If you have a question about the statement, please contact Kathy J.

MAC & CHEESE NEEDED – John’s Meals has begun the Spring Semester of weekend meal distribution for students and siblings in the UASD elementary schools in food-insecure homes and is once again seeking donations of individual, microwavable cups/packs of Macaroni & Cheese. They
can be placed in the Matthew 25 cupboard in the rear of church. Approximately 160 bags/week are delivered, with 300+ cups of Mac & Cheese per month on the rotating 2-week menu. Thank you for your continued support for John’s Meals.

THE 2020 FLOWER CHART, GREETER SIGN-UP, AND BULLETIN SPONSOR SIGN-UP are now posted in the vestibule. Please consider participating in the life of the church by greeting members when they enter or sponsoring altar flowers or bulletins. Payments for flowers are made out to the Zion UCC Altar Guild ($35.00); payments for bulletins are made to Zion UCC (separate check for $15.00).

TOTEM POLE PLAYHOUSE – 2020 MATINEE OUTING: TPP has a great lineup of shows for 2020. To help decide which show the Zion UCC group attends, please vote your choice on the chart on the credenza. A description of each show is included. “Vote early and vote often.”

TRIVIA NITE WINNERS – 2020 was a mere twelve days old when generous Trivia Nite participants met this past Sunday for the first night of competition in the new year. After an evening of intriguing questions, food, and fellowship shared among friends, Team Trinity (comprised of Cytha G., Dani and Wayne S., and Cytha and Anding G.), who dramatically revealed their matching shirts (with Trinity UCC logo), came out on top, amassing $375 for their charity of choice: The Zoos Victoria Bushfire Emergency Wildlife Fund (ZVBEWF).
About the ZVBEWF: Zoos Victoria is responding to the national bushfire-affected areas of Australia where it is estimated that as many as 500 million animals – including critically endangered species – have perished, with the full impact to be determined in the coming months. Donations made to their not-for-profit organization will provide emergency veterinary care and scientific intervention (such as exploring supplementary feeding for the animals who have survived, but whose habitats have been destroyed) and will be utilized in consultation with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to ensure funds most effectively assist injured wildlife and their habitat.

Genesis 1:26 <The Message (MSG)>: God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature so they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.”
