2nd Sunday in Lent:  Love for All

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Prelude

The wheel of the church year has turned to Lent. In Advent we moved from darkness into the light, during Epiphany we celebrated the revelation of the light of Christ to all the world, and now in Lent we move from light into the darkness of Good Friday.  To symbolize this journey we have six candles on the altar, representing the 6 Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter.  Each Sunday we will extinguish another candle as the passion of Christ draws near.

Announcements

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   We light a light in the name of God who lit the world and breathed the breath of life into us.

People:  We light a light in the name of the Son who saved the world and stretched out His hand to me.

Leader:   We light a light in the name of the Spirit who encompasses the world and blesses our soul with yearning.

All:         We will light three lights for the Trinity of love:  God above us, God beside us, God beneath us; the beginning, the end, the everlasting one.

One:       People of God, we gather again:  in this sacred space, in this sacred moment.  Just for a time leave daily concerns aside, for here we recall the stories of faith, here we see God moving amongst us, here we are known by name, here we remember whose we are.

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   God of compassion, you are slow to anger and full of mercy, welcoming sinners who return to you with penitent hearts.  Receive in your loving embrace all who come home to you.  Seat them at your bountiful table of grace, that, with all your children, they may feast with delight on all that satisfies the hungry heart.  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

All:         Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Leader:   When Abram was ninety-nine years old, nearly dead,

People:  Yahweh appeared to him. . . as in many times before

Leader:   and as they walked: . . . and spoke

People:  Yahweh bound them together. . . in covenant.

Leader:   Abram was changed:. . . in name and nature,

People:  for God promised a future,

Leader:   an everlasting bond between God and humanity . . . for all generations and for all time,
