Holy Communion

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Preludes:   “I Will Sing Hallelujah”………….Johnson

“Lift Me Up”…………….Johnson

Quartet: Dwight , Kevin , Dennis , and Bob

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   Holy Spirit, Creator, as you hovered over the waters, cover us with the light of your presence.

All:         Holy Spirit, Comforter, by you we are born again, cover us with the light of your holiness.

Leader:  Holy Spirit, Redeemer, by you we are made a living temple, cover us with the light of redemption.

All:         Breath of life, you breathe light into the whole body of the Church and dwell in each one of us.

Response: “Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ”………..……#526, v 1

*Call To Worship

One:       Gather, seekers, bring your crayons, smart phones and tablet computers.  Bring your questions, creativity, and wondering.

All:         Come to discover the Holy One.

One:       Gather, friends, bring your symbols, stories, and music.  Bring your talents, insights, and integrity.

All:         Come to share in the Holy.

One:       Gather, followers, bring the bread and the cup.

All:         Come to worship the Holy One!

*Hymn: “We Come as Guests Invited”…… ………………#504

Leader:   Creating God, open us to your transformative touch.  Prepare us for the subtle and subversive ways you creep into our lives, and prepare us for the blatant and intrusive ways you confront our living.

 We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

People:  Sometimes, God, we avoid you because we do not want to wrestle with those things weighing on our hearts, we do not want to deal with those things we know we are called to address:  those with whom we have broken trust; those suffering from avoidable circumstances; those whom we fail to stand up for; those with whom we avoid eye contact.  When we fail to spend time with you, we fail to learn about ourselves.  Forgive us.  Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   When we experience God’s touch we are never the same.  Suddenly, our weaknesses reveal God’s strength, our doubts reveal God’s grace, our indifference reveals God’s never-ending love!  With a simple touch, God’s grace shines in and through us.

All:         Amen.

Reading Of The Scripture: Genesis 32: 22-31 (O.T., pg. 29)

A Time For Children

Anthem:       “Go Down Moses”  ……… arr. Johnson

Quartet: Dwight , Kevin , Dennis , and Bob

Reading Of The Gospel:   Matthew 14: 13-21 (N.T., pg. 15)

 We Reflect On New Possibilities

Message For This Day

*Hymn: “Be Known to Us in Breaking Bread”………….…..#500

Pastoral Prayer And The Lord’s Prayer

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Our Offering: Our financial offering is one way that our members participate in the mission and ministry of this church. We thank you for your financial support.  For those of you who are visiting, please feel no need to participate in the offering.  This worship service is our gift to you.

*Doxology: “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings” ……………….#606

*Prayer Of Dedication

Leader:   Gracious God, we ask that you accept these gifts.  Some are taken from an abundance of riches, and a scarcity of faith.  Some are shared from an abundance of faith, and a scarcity of riches.  We share what we can, trusting that your blessing will transform what we give for the sake of your realm.  Amen.

 The Sacrament Of Holy Communion

Leader:.. God of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar, Rebekah and Isaac, Jacob and Esau, Leah and Rachel, there is no pain that does not echo in your heart, and so we pray:  for all the grief and for all the losses, for the tears shed and the cries unheard, for all the half goodbyes, relationships without resolve, and for all the things that we have left unsaid, we pray.  Broken, tired and hungry, we come to you seeking healing, strength, and nourishment knowing that you will make us whole.

People:. So we, a diverse group of people, gather around to break and share this bread together as a way of remembering the one whom we follow.  The one who was fully who God created him to be; the one who loved God with all his heart, with all his mind, and with all his understanding.  The one who taught us about love, the one who taught us to pray; the one who wrestled and struggled, as we often do; the one who has freed us from the vices of this world.

Leader:.. We look at the cross and remember the one who died a cruel death because of beliefs, because of love, because of faith.

People:. We take the bread and remember the one who loved us all and taught us to live peacefully together as one community, the one who reminds us that we are never alone, the one who is the Christ.  May the memory of the Christ in this meal, and in each other, sustain us for the struggles we face now, and in the journey ahead.

All:…….. We offer you thanks, creative God, for the gifts of this time together, and the gifts of this simple meal.  May we look one another in the eye, as we share in the bread and cup, and covenant together to work for your kingdom on earth.  Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

*Closing Hymn: “All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly” …………….#509

Leader:   God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.  Amen.
