Baptism and Holy Communion

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Prelude

Announcements

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:         Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All:               Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader:         Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All:               We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

Response: “Come to the Table of Grace”……………#507, v. 1

 *Call To Worship

Leader:         This is the place and this is the ground in which the Body of Christ grows.  You who are teachers, come and grow; you who are prophets, come and grow; you who are evangelists, come and grow; you who are pastors, come and grow; you who are undecided come and grow; you who are wary, come and grow; you who are confident, come and grow; you who are fledgling, come and grow; come and grow in the knowledge, experience and love of God.

*Hymn: “Come, Behold! The Feast of Heaven”…. ………#511

 *Invocation

All:               Be with us, God of grace, as we open ourselves up to experiencing more of faith and more of life.  We long to grow in humility and patience, to grow in our understanding of how the Body of Christ is knitted together, and more fully understand how we can build each other up as your community, the Church.  May your spirit be with us.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:         We declare we are guilty of the sin of ignorance, for assuming that everyone experiences life as we do.  Intellectually we know this is not true, but we act as if it is.  We make assumptions about what is normal, and are critical of those who don’t behave according to our expectations.  We declare we are guilty of the sin of omission.  We refuse to see where we have been complicit in creating disadvantage and ignoring injustice because it makes us uncomfortable and challenges our thinking and lifestyle.  Amen.  (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

All:               Christ who loves us extends grace to each and every one of us.  No one is excluded from this   gift; we need not hold on to and be measured by the transgressions of our past.  With this as our reassurance, we seek to equip ourselves for the work of ministry and for building up the church.  The Spirit of God binds us together in peace, and together we can grow in faith and love.  Amen.

The Sacrament Of Baptism For

Maci Clair

Born April 9, 2018, to Lee and Celine

 Welcome

Leader:         They were bringing children to Jesus that Jesus might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them.  But when Jesus saw it, Jesus was indignant, and said to them,

People:        “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the realm of God.  Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the realm of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Leader:         And Jesus took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

Address

Leader:         The sacrament of baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God.  Inasmuch as the promise of the gospel is not only to us but also to our children, baptism with water and the Holy Spirit is the mark of their acceptance into the care of Christ’s church, the sign and seal of their participation in God’s forgiveness, and the beginning of their growth into full Christian faith and discipleship.

People:        This is the water of baptism.  Out of this water we rise with new life, forgiven of sin and one in Christ, members of Christ’s body.

 Questions For The Family

Pastor:         Do you desire to have Maci baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ?

Family:        We do.

Pastor:         Will you encourage Maci to renounce the powers of evil and to receive the freedom of new life in Christ?

Family:        We will, with the help of God.

Pastor:         Will you teach her that she may be led to profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

Family:        We will, with the help of God.

Pastor:         Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow with Maci in the Christian faith, to help her to be a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ by celebrating Christ’s presence, by furthering Christ’s mission in all the world, and by offering the nurture of the Christian church so that she may affirm her baptism?

Family:        We do, with the help of God.

 *Congregational Assent (Please stand)

Leader:         Jesus Christ calls us to make disciples of all nations and to offer them the gift of grace in baptism. Do you, who witness and celebrate this sacrament, promise your love, support, and care to the one about to be baptized, as she lives and grows in Christ?

People:        We promise our love, support, and care.  (Please be seated)

 Blessing Of The Water

Pastor:         Bless by your Holy Spirit, gracious God, this water.  By your Holy Spirit save those who confess the name of Jesus Christ that sin may have no power over them.  Create new life in the one baptized this day that she may rise in Christ.  Glory to you, eternal God, the one who was, and is, and shall always

Act Of Baptism

Prayer For The Baptized

Pastor:         We give you thanks, O Holy One, mother and father of all the faithful, for this your child and for the grace acknowledged here today in water and the Holy Spirit.  Embrace us all as sons and daughters in the one household of your love.  Grant us grace to receive, nurture, and befriend this new member of the body of Christ.

All:               Give to the newly baptized:  strength for life’s journey, courage in time of suffering, the joy of faith, the freedom of love, and the hope of new life:  through Jesus Christ, who makes us one.  Amen.

The Sacrament Of Holy Communion

Invitation

Leader:…….. Come, household of God:  alien and well-known, stranger and familiar.  Know that God has called you to this place and said all are welcome.  We are all a part of this community; let us all share in this sacrament together.

Prayer

Leader:…….. One God, holy and good, we have been united with you through the life and ministry, death and resurrection, of Jesus the Christ.

People:……. We come from different places and bring our different ideas and stories to this place.  You welcome us, and proclaim to the world that we all are connected, that we all belong.  Now, may we who are united by your Spirit experience your presence in a bold and new way.

Leader:…….. At his last meal with his friends Jesus called them and us to remember, and so we do that now.  We remember:  how Jesus took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and shared it among them.

People:……. One loaf, broken for all.

Leader:…….. Later Jesus took a cup, and again gave you thanks, and shared that with them.

People:……. One cup, shared for all.

Leader:…….. “These are my body and blood,” he said.  “Whenever you share in this meal, remember me.”

People:……. One God, remembered by all.

Leader:…….. Bless us who have gathered here out of love for you, and strengthen us by these gifts to serve you in the world and share your love with everyone we meet.

 Prayer Of Consecration

Distribution Of The Elements (Please note the wine is in the outer ring and the grape juice is in the inner rings. The round wafers are gluten-free.  Please hold each element so we may eat and drink together.)

Prayer Of Thanksgiving

All:………….. We offer you thanks, creative God, for the gifts of this time together, and the gifts of this simple meal.  May we look one another in the eye, as we share in the bread and cup, and covenant together to work for your kingdom on earth.  Amen.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed Lives

Hoffman Homes:  School Supplies. Zion will again be collecting school supplies to be donated to Hoffman Homes to support their school, Hoffman Academy.  Check out the display board in the back of the sanctuary with slips of paper listing items to be purchased.  The items on each slip of paper will cost between $15 and $25.  Take as many slips as you like, then return your purchased items to the collection bin by Sunday, August 19. There are samples of the items so you will know exactly what to get!  I hope you can take advantage of the back-to-school sales to stretch your dollars!   Monetary donations will also be accepted, and I will do your shopping for you!  Please make those checks payable to Jo.  Thank you for your support of this project!  (This is in lieu of the Hoffman Homes Christmas toy donations.)  Questions or money, see Jo.

Free Ice Cream Supports John’s Meals

Trinity Lutheran church in Arendtsville will hold a free Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 12, to raise funds for the John’s Meals program which provided weekend meals to 170 elementary students during the 2017 school year. The program is struggling financially with the cost of providing the meals since cash donations have sagged 42% while meals distributed were up 124% from when the program began.

Beginning at 6 p.m. the back yard of the parsonage next to Trinity Lutheran Church will be transformed into a melee of ice cream eaters enjoying homemade music, fellowship, and games and sharing free-will donations to help hungry weekend students. This is a rain or shine event.

Free-will offerings at the Ice Cream Social will translate directly into food items thus reducing the projected $31,000 cost of the feeding program during the 2018-19 school year. Checks and money orders will be gratefully accepted by mail at UACT, P. O. Box 593, Arendtsville, PA 17303 if you can’t make it.
