Out of the Shadow

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

*Where noted, please stand if able.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Prelude

Announcements

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader: Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All: Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader: Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All: We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One: Liberating God, the voice of Jesus Christ calls us out of shadows into new life.  Yet sometimes, we ignore that voice even when it calls within our heart.  We may think ourselves unworthy or too busy, or too unskilled to be prophets and disciples.  At other times, we may discredit the ministry of others, believing that you would only call certain kinds of people to proclaim your word.  Liberate us again, O God.  Set us free from our misunderstandings and help us to embrace and embody your hopes and dreams.  Amen. (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One: God’s Spirit has given us life.

All: Christ has set us free!

One: God forgives us.

All: Christ has set us free!

One: Let us live by the Spirit.

All: Christ has set us free!  Alleluia!  Amen.

Book Club – Zion’s Readers will meet once again on September 12th at 7:00 p.m.in the Mustard Seed Room to discuss “My Brilliant Career” by Miles Franklin.  New readers are always welcome!  Here is a synopsis:

First published in 1901, this Australian classic is the candid tale of the aspirations and frustrations of sixteen-year old Sybylla Melvin, a headstrong country girl constrained by middle-class social arrangements (especially the pressure to marry). Trapped on her parents’ outback farm, Sybylla simultaneously loves bush life and hates the physical burdens it imposes.  She longs for a more refined lifestyle – to read, to think, to sing – but most of all to do great things.  Suddenly her life is transformed when she is whisked away to live on her grandmother’s gracious property.  There Sybylla falls under the eye of the rich and handsome Harry Beecham.  Soon she finds herself choosingbetween everything a conventional life offers and her own plans for a “brilliant career”.

Upper Adams Prayer Breakfast – Elder David L. Roberts, pastor of the Amos Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Mummasburg, will headline the next meeting of the Upper Adams Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday, September 3rd at the Apple Bin.  Brother Roberts was ordained fifteen years ago after service as a deacon.  He is a self-described “working pastor”, having held the position of maintenance supervisor for David Sites Realty for many years.  He and his wife, Lois, have two of their post-college children still in the South Central PA area although their youngest, an Air Force retiree, and his Penn State engineer brother moved farther south.  Everyone is invited to attend this always multi-denominational group to learn from and enjoy the speaker’s insights.  The October 1st gathering will be led by the director of the Adams Rescue Mission, Pastor Bruce Dietrick.

“Stop The Bleed” – Do you know how to stop a wound that is bleeding in an emergency situation? “Stop the Bleed” is a program developed by federal government agencies utilizing knowledge won on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq to treat soldiers and civilians.  Materials used can be stored in churches, schools, and businesses, and with training may help you save neighbors’ and friends’ lives.  St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church in Glen Rock, PA is hosting a workshop on September 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. that includes a video training session and hands-on practicum.  The training should conclude before noon.  If interested, please call 717-235-7313 or email stjacobs@comcast.net by August 26th.
