Shaping Community

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Prelude

 Announcements

 Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader:   Loving Spirit, you have chosen us to receive your light, and we light a candle as a sign of our gratitude.

All:         Friend, Advocate, Guide—Lord Jesus you enfold us in your love, and we light a candle to celebrate your Presence, in which we rest.

Leader:   Holy God, you have drawn us to your wonder, as you set your seal upon us in our baptism.  We light a candle in amazement that you care for each and every one of us, as your own child.

All:         We light three candles for the Holy Trinity that loves, redeems, and sustains us.

 Response:   “God Welcomes All”……………………..#399

 *Call To Worship

All:         We are the children of God the creator.  We are the brothers and sisters of Christ the redeemer.  We are friends of Spirit the reconciler.  We are kin with Earth that sustains us.  We are family, one to another, we are the church.  Let us worship God.

*Hymn: “Arise, Your Light Is Come!”………#744

 *Invocation

Leader:   God, here in this place you draw us into your family.  Our worldly status does not concern you.  You are not occupied with thoughts of our successes or failures.  Your regard for us does not depend in our attractiveness or wealth.  You see us through the eyes of love.  Here we do not have to apologize for our idiosyncrasies or crazy ideas.  Here we do not have to hide uncertainty and doubt.  Here we can be untidy in our thinking, and confused in our views.  Here we are bound so close to you that we can claim without anxiety or fear that we are your children.  Here we can seek clarity and be built up for the journey of faith.  Here we can rest easy in your loving kindness.  And so this is how we come.  Amen.

We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

Leader:   In the safety, security, and loving kindness of this community, we acknowledge the ways in which we have fallen short of your calling. We claim to be your children, yet act as if we are distant relatives.  We claim to be a family, yet often we treat our neighbours as strangers.   We claim to be forgiving, but prefer to hold a grudge.  We claim to speak on your behalf, but sometimes we use unkind words.   (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

Leader:   If you, our God, were to hold us accountable for all our wrongdoings, it would be impossible for us to stand under the weight of grief and anguish.  But this is not our fate, for you hold out your hand in forgiveness, and invite us to wash away our wrong, our grief, our anguish, and to live as redeemed people.

All:         Thank you for such steadfast love, for such unending kindness.  We are truly grateful.

Free Ice Cream Supports John’s Meals

Trinity Lutheran church in Arendtsville will hold a free Ice Cream Social today, August 12, to raise funds for the John’s Meals program which provided weekend meals to 170 elementary students during the 2017 school year. The program is struggling financially with the cost of providing the meals since cash donations have sagged 42% while meals distributed were up 124% from when the program began.

Beginning at 6 p.m. the back yard of the parsonage next to Trinity Lutheran Church will be transformed into a melee of ice cream eaters enjoying homemade music, fellowship, and games and sharing free-will donations to help hungry weekend students. This is a rain or shine event.

Free-will offerings at the Ice Cream Social will translate directly into food items thus reducing the projected $31,000 cost of the feeding program during the 2018-19 school year. Checks and money orders will be gratefully accepted by mail at UACT, P. O. Box 593, Arendtsville, PA 17303 if you can’t make it.

Community Aid Clothing Bin is available in the Zion House parking lot for clothing donations along with shoes, accessories, draperies, and bed linens. We receive funds each quarter based upon the weight of items deposited in the container, and those funds are used toward the Mission BudgetFor the first quarter of 2018, Zion received $272.  After your yard sales, consider donating unsold appropriate items to the bin.

Single Serve, Microwaveable Cups Of Macaroni And Cheese are being collected to benefit John’s Meals.  The cups need not be a brand name (like Kraft); store brand is fine.  We are aiming to provide 200 cups each month and they may be placed in the cupboard in the rear of the church. The 18-pkg boxes of single-serve Mac and Cheese is also a good donation. It is cheaper and easier to store (boxes).  Any questions, please see Chris.  As always, thank you so much for your faithful support of this ministry.
