Love’s Disruptive Witness

Visitors: Welcome to our church.  Please sign our guest book!  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large-print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.

We Gather In Awe And Wonder

Chime Interlude And Candle Lighting

Leader: We are a people living in the light of God’s resurrection power.  We light a candle to celebrate this amazing love.

People: We are a people living in the light of Christ’s saving power.  We light a candle to celebrate our redemption.

Leader: We are a people enlivened and emboldened by the Holy Spirit.  We light a candle to celebrate this gift of divine presence.

People: We give thanks for all the ways that Easter has transformed our world, given us hope, and brought us into the light.

 *Call To Worship

One: Come let us rejoice in the stone the builders rejected.

All: Christ is our strength and our salvation, there is no other.

One: Come let us enter the gates of righteousness, welcomed by Christ.

All: In the house of God’s love and justice we encounter life.

One: Come let us turn to the One who is our light.

All: We give thanks to the One whose steadfast love endures forever.

*Hymn: “Christ Arose!”………………..…………….……(insert)

One: Holy One, the success of your compassion often seems far away, yet in this time of worship, we claim compassion’s promise.  The success of your peace seems out of reach, yet in this time of worship we claim the promise of peace.  The headlines daily negate the success of your justice, yet in this time of worship, we claim the promise of justice.  In this time of worship, we gather to rekindle and reclaim the strength we find in you, so when we leave this place we will do so as witnesses to your disruptive resurrection love.  Amen.

 We Recognize Our Brokenness

Prayer Of Confession

One: Spirit of the risen Christ you know the anxiety we feel whenever we must confront the destructive forces in our world, our communities, our congregation, our families, or our own lives.  It is so much easier to remain silent than to speak out, stand up, be counted, and let love’s witness do its work through us.  Even when the harm done is unmistakable, we too often find ourselves looking the other way, pretending the damage does not exist, or there is nothing we can do.  We feel powerless and afraid of what it might mean if our voice and actions disrupt the calm of our complicity.  May your Spirit fall upon us that we may discover our voice, reclaiming the power of the Christ for whom death has no hold and who gives life to all. (A time for silent prayers of confession.)

 Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness

One: The God of resurrection is our cornerstone, the foundation of our strength and hope.

All: Thanks be to God!

The Sacrament Of Baptism

Leader:   They were bringing children to Jesus that Jesus might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them.  But when Jesus saw it, Jesus was indignant, and said to them,

People:  “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the realm of God.  Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the realm of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Leader:   And Jesus took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

Leader:   The sacrament of baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God.  Inasmuch as the promise of the gospel is not only to us but also to our children, baptism with water and the Holy Spirit is the mark of their acceptance into the care of Christ’s church, the sign and seal of their participation in God’s forgiveness, and the beginning of their growth into full Christian faith and discipleship.

People:  This is the water of baptism.  Out of this water we rise with new life, forgiven of sin and one in Christ, members of Christ’s body.

 Questions For The Family

Pastor:   Do you desire to have Eloise baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ?

Family:  We do.

Pastor:   Will you encourage Eloise to renounce the powers of evil and to receive the freedom of new life in Christ?

Family:  We will, with the help of God.

Pastor:   Will you teach her that she may be led to profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

Family:  We will, with the help of God.

Pastor:   Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow with Eloise in the Christian faith, to help her to be a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ by celebrating Christ’s presence, by furthering Christ’s mission in all the world, and by offering the nurture of the Christian church so that she may affirm her baptism?

Family:  We do, with the help of God.

*Congregational Assent (Please stand)

Leader:   Jesus Christ calls us to make disciples of all nations and to offer them the gift of grace in baptism.  Do you, who witness and celebrate this sacrament, promise your love, support, and care to the one about to be baptized, as she lives  and grows in Christ?

People:  We promise our love, support, and care.  (Please be seated)

 Blessing Of The Water

Pastor:   Bless by your Holy Spirit, gracious God, this water.  By your Holy Spirit save those who confess the name of Jesus Christ that sin may have no power over them.  Create new life in the one baptized this day that she may rise in Christ.  Glory to you, eternal God, the one who was, and is, and shall always be, world without end.  Amen.

 Act Of Baptism

Prayer For The Baptized

Pastor:   We give you thanks, O Holy One, mother and father of all the faithful, for this your child and for the grace acknowledged here today in water and the Holy Spirit.  Embrace us all as sons and daughters in the one household of your love.  Grant us grace to receive, nurture, and befriend this new member of the body of Christ.

All:         Give to the newly baptized:  strength for life’s journey, courage in time of suffering, the joy of faith, the freedom of love, and the hope of new life:  through Jesus Christ, who makes us one.  Amen.

 *Prayer Of Dedication

One: God, we thank you for the countless acts of love both large and small that give life.  When we focus solely on the disappointments and the brokenness, we grow discouraged and feel ready to give up.  However, when we are reminded of the kindness and compassion that we have known, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the many ways your love is at work in our world and lives.  We dedicate these offerings and our lives to the power of your eternal love and grace.

We Go Forth To Live Transformed lives

*Closing Hymn: “Christ Is Alive” ………………………….……..….#246

One: Go forth with the courage to speak out where your voice is needed.

All: We will not be silent.

One: Go forth ready to let love be a disruptive presence in your life and world.

All: We will live as witnesses to resurrection power, filled with the spirit of the One who gives us life.

One: May the God of eternal love, the Christ who sends us forth in love, and the Spirit who fills us with love’s presence go with you this day and every day.
