 “In the Boat Together”

Visitors:  Welcome to our church.  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead toward the nursery.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.  Please sign our guest book!

 We Gather To Worship

Prelude

Announcements

Chime Interlude

*Call To Worship

Leader:             In a world that often causes us to be afraid. . . (response)

Leader:             During a time in history that often seems uncertain . . . (response)

Leader:             Living in the midst of great ecological change and challenge. . . (response)

Leader:             And trying to cope with the everyday stresses of modern life. . . (response)

Response:          We gather in the promise of God’s peace.  We come to be renewed by Christ’s love.  We open ourselves to the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.

*Hymn:             “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”……………………………………..     #78

*Opening Prayer
All:                   Spirit of love and courage, as we begin this time of worship, grant us pause to be filled anew with the trust and dignity of Jesus the Christ.  May Jesus’ full embrace of life, with all of its unknowns, be our strength and inspiration.  This we ask in Christ’s enduring name.  Amen.   (We light the Christ Candle.)

Prayer Of Confession
Leader:             We are so often given over to fear, O God.  Like the disciples we huddle together, swamped in spirit by the waves of life in their many different forms.
People:             For it is not as though there is nothing to be afraid of.  And we need not pretend that faith puts an end to all doubt.
Leader:             It is simply that in those difficult and very human moments we do not reach out to you.
People:             We do not seek the reassurance and calm that you are so willing to give.  Hear then our cry for healing; hear in our hearts our longing for calming peace.   (A time for silent prayers of confession; Music:  “Peace, Perfect Peace.”)

Words Of Assurance

Leader:          “Peace!  Be still!”  Friends, in and through Christ, love has overcome.  Love is victorious.  We arise as with the dawning of a new day.

People:          Praise be to God.  Amen!

Affirmation:    “O Lord Most High”. . . ……………….…………………………#828

 We Respond To God

*Hymn:  “Give to the Winds Your Fears”…………………………………………...#618

Prayers Of The People And The Lord's Prayer

Leader:          As one who journeys with us in life, never above or beyond us, we come to God with our prayers:

People:          Hope for change, cries for meaning, and concerns for new directions forward.

Leader:          In the midst of life’s great and many challenges we cry out to you, O God.  For sometimes the weight of the world’s problems seem overwhelming and we become paralyzed with the sense that nothing we do really makes a difference.  (We name those who have requested prayer.)

People:          Hear our cry and be our healing.

Leader:          For those who have little hope or joy in life and those bound by fear and dread, we pray.  Through human warmth and kindness, courage and persistence, may there be a crossing over to new ways of being.

People:          Hear our cry and be our healing.

Leader:          And for a vision that will draw us closer to you and your ways in the world, we pray.  Strengthen us to seek new ways of being your people, daring to follow and to imaginatively create community in the name of Christ.  May our thinking be renewed and our souls enlarged.

People:          Hear our cry and be our healing.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin         against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.  Amen.)

Dear Zion Family:  Thank you for sponsoring a hole at the 3rd Annual Erika Cox/Jared Stone golf tournament.  Your support is greatly appreciated by my family and the students that receive these scholarships.  We had our most successful year yet, with 52 golfers and our highest proceeds raised.  A special thank you to Dick for organizing a team and golfing that day.  It's a blessing for us to be able to remember my cousin this way - thank you for being a part of it.  Jessica

Read All About It!  Please prayerfully consider becoming a sponsor, and adding to Zion’s Sunday School library youth collection!  Zion’s CEST is already gearing up for the 2009-2010 Sunday School year, and we are once again asking for help from Zion’s congregation to sponsor the books and/or DVDs that accompany our K-6th Grade Rotational Model Curriculum.  Zion’s congregational support for this endeavor last year was overwhelming!  If every church family unit sponsored just one book or video, our needs would be quickly met!  Such a sponsorship helps us offset our Sunday School budget significantly.  Books and DVDs start at $7.00 and vary in price and topic.  For your convenience, the sponsor sign-up sheet is now located on a clipboard on the credenza at the rear of the sanctuary.  Please submit payment to either Gina or Meagan (checks may be made payable to Zion Sunday School).  Thank you in advance for your support, Zion’s Christian Education Steering Team (CEST).

Greeters Needed for July 5, 12, 19, 26; Aug. 2, 9, 16, 23; Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27.

Prayers Of The People:  You are invited to offer any prayers you wish by writing them on the PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE paper located at the rear of the sanctuary.  Please share both joys and concerns.  Also, if you would like to share a prayer out loud during the pastoral prayers you are invited to do so during the interval provided.

Please Tell Us.  Is someone you love hospitalized?  Does someone need a visit from the pastor or the visitation team?  Do you have a birth, marriage, death or other information you'd like to include in the newsletter or bulletin?  Please tell us!  Our church office counts on you to keep us informed.  Give us a call at the office.  Hospital visitors for this month are listed with the lay ministers in this bulletin and in the monthly newsletters.

If You Have A Need For Prayer, please remember that we have a prayer chain available.  Please call Liz; she will activate the chain for you.   You may also submit a prayer request to the Prayer Center on our Web site.  It is located under “Connect.”   Our Lord teaches us in Matthew Chapter 18:  19"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."
