“Sent with Power”

Visitors:  Welcome to our church.  If you do not have a church home, we pray that you will find one with us.  We have large print bulletins available, as well as hearing assistance devices.  Please ask an usher if you require either of these.  Restrooms are located in the church school building.  Go through the door next to the choir loft, and straight ahead toward the nursery.  We also have restrooms downstairs in Fellowship Hall.  Again, exit through the door next to the choir loft, turn left down the hall, and go down the steps.  Please sign our guest book!

We Gather To Worship

Prelude

Chime Interlude

*Call To Worship

Leader:      Here is an altar familiar and worn with use.  Come, look beyond the grains of wood, and sense the power it holds to feed, unite, and create a holy community.

People:      May we glimpse godly wisdom that is beyond ordinary sight.

Leader:      Here is a Bible holding stories of faith, perhaps grown ordinary with repetition.  Come, hear anew the sacred words and listen between the lines for the calling and sending, teaching and healing.

People:      May we glimpse godly wisdom that is beyond ordinary sight.

Leader:      Here is our ordinary community made of peculiarities and imperfections.  Come, draw near to one another in spirit and recognize the holy presence that makes us an extraordinary people of justice and love and good work.

People:      May we glimpse godly wisdom that is beyond ordinary sight.   (We light the Christ candle.)

*Hymn:     “Open My Eyes, That I May See”………………………………….       #557

*Opening Prayer

All:            We come together in this place where the ordinary becomes sanctified and the familiar is made new.  Make us mindful, O Prophetic One, of your call on our lives and of the Spirit’s power.  Fill us with holy imagination and vision as we gather up the courage to live as your people in this world.

Prayer Of Confession

One:          Jesus sent the disciples out with power to carry on Jesus’ mission of proclamation and healing.

Two:         God’s way is realized in our day when someone chooses to be love in the midst of hatred and violence.

One:          When someone waits patiently in the face of uncertain anxiety.

Two:         When someone listens, and holds, and listens again.

One:          When someone reaches out with a healing touch.

Two:         When someone speaks and sweats and lives to see justice for all.

One:          When someone extends a hand of kindness at just the right time.

Two:         When someone sees possibility and acts within a hopeless situation.

Both:         Will you be that someone? (A time for silent prayers of confession; Music:  “Bind Us Together.”)

Assurance Of God’s Forgiveness (based on 2 Corinthians 12: 9)

Leader:      In our best intentions, God’s power is revealed.  In our unrealized plans, God’s power remains steadfast.  Trust that God’s grace is sufficient for God’s power is made known in our weakness.  Where our ability ends, God’s Spirit begins and the way of God comes to life.

Leader:      We believe this world can be a place of peace:  where love triumphs over war; where people of different faiths live together in good will; where there is unity among neighbours.

All:            We believe in God’s way of love and peace, and we will proclaim it.

Leader:      We believe this world can be a place of truth:  where words of honesty are heard more often than words of propaganda; where there is honour among those who govern; where integrity guides our daily lives.
