Last Wednesday evening we smeared ashes on our foreheads. On Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent, we talked about rainbows and promises when we read the story of Noah.   It seems a pretty strange leap, especially at the beginning of the Lenten season. But each represents in its own way, a new beginning.

Ash Wednesday is a solemn way of marking our need to turn away from sin, and return to the Lord. In the rainbow is the promise that God will welcome us back home, no matter how far we stray. A rainbow is made up of water and light, the two most essential ingredients for human life. So this is a fitting symbol for the covenant, or promise, between God and God’s people.

On Wednesday of this week we observe Ash Wednesday.  This is a first step on our Lenten journey.  In choir we have been practicing three pieces for that service.  One of the anthems is "Lead Me Back" (Choplin).  It tells the familiar story of the prodigal son with a narration of the scripture over a beautiful piano accompaniment and moving choral arrangement.   At first I questioned it as being appropriate for  Ash Wednesday.  We have recommended readings and the prodigal son is not one of them!  But after we sang through it once, I was converted.  It is perfect for that setting.
