Last Wednesday evening we smeared ashes on our foreheads. On Sunday, the first Sunday of Lent, we talked about rainbows and promises when we read the story of Noah. It seems a pretty strange leap, especially at the beginning of the Lenten season. But each represents in its own way, a new beginning.
Ash Wednesday is a solemn way of marking our need to turn away from sin, and return to the Lord. In the rainbow is the promise that God will welcome us back home, no matter how far we stray. A rainbow is made up of water and light, the two most essential ingredients for human life. So this is a fitting symbol for the covenant, or promise, between God and God’s people.
