On Saturday March 26, 2011 our 8th grade Confirmands gathered with liturgical artist Diane Brandt at Lancaster Seminary. Diane led the girls through a proces of spiritual discernment towards the goal of creating the sacred space for their worship service of Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday. We studied the passage in Acts 2 1-5 and prayed about the rushing wind and tongues of fire that came upon the disciples at the first Pentecost after Jesus’ death, as recorded in Acts. The girls were challenged to “pray through paint” as they created an installation art piece that will be in the sanctuary on their special day. We think the Holy Spirit was guiding them as they depicted, in their art work, the many voices heard that on that birthday of the Church, the way in which the disciples were “all together in one room” and the way that tongues of flame, and the rushing wind led them into an entirely new place in their lives. We pray that this confirmation process will do the same for our young people and in worship on this coming Pentecost may we all be led to a new understanding of discipleship.
